catalysts for sulfur removal from fuels and gas. Also, they can be used in other
applications, such as those related fuel cells and carbon management (CO2
conversion into fuels).

Dr. Nedal Abu-Thabit
(Post Doctoral
Fellow)
Dr. Nedal received his PhD in polymer
chemistry from KFUPM in 2010. His research
interest is related to ionic polymers with
potential applications for Enhanced Oil
Recovery (EOR) and Polyelectrolyte membranes
fuel cells (PEMFCs). Polymers designed for
EOR applications are water soluble and
usually synthesized by free radical
polymerization; The PEMFCs polymers are
water-insoluble and are usually prepared by
step growth polymerization. In both areas,
my research focused on finding new chemical
approaches to prepare phosphonic acid-based
ionic polymers which are new area of
research for both PEMFCs and EOR
applications. The major work was carried out
is modification of polysulfone backbone with
controlled high degree of phosphonation.
Another area of interest is preparation of
polymeric blends. This approach is very
powerful since the resultant blend can have
enhance desired characteristics and
features. Specific interest is the
preparation of ionically and covalently
polyelectrolytes as PEMs for fuel cells
applications.
