The Students Mentorship Program (SMP) is sponsored by the
Center of Excellence in Nanotechnology (CENT) of King Fahd
University of Petroleum and Minerals. The program aims to train
undergraduate students from science and engineering disciplines
on several nanotechnology-related techniques and to familiarize
them with essential laboratory instrumentation, including
electronic microscopy, X-Ray analysis, optical characterization
of nanoparticle suspensions, laser synthesized nanoparticles,
chemical vapor deposition, CNT synthesis, magnetron sputtering,
and chemical synthesis.
Description:
At the beginning of the academic semester, a specific number
of undergraduate students from different majors will be selected
according to some criteria including their GPAs, relevance of
their majors to nanotechnology applications, their enthusiasm
toward the field of nanoscience, etc. Each group of students is
assigned to work with a professor’s research group for
approximately six hours weekly.
The student is anticipated to have the ability to eventually
run the equipment and to participate with the professor and with
group members in ongoing research work. In order to ensure the
level of management attained by the student as well as his
discipline, the student is asked to fill a tri-weekly report
about his progress. Each student should also present a short
talk of what he learned at the end of the academic semester..
